Here in Central Texas, we are all stewards of a unique natural environment.

Central Texas was once a shallow ocean. Now a limestone oasis fed by Edwards Aquifer, the Austin area is part of an environmentally sensitive recharge zone. All of our waterways represent the aboveground components in a vast underground water system, ultimately feeding into one of the most prolific artesian aquifers in the world. This ocean sized underground lake beneath us extends all the way into Oklahoma, Arkansas, and northern Mexico. It is filled with many of the same biodiverse organisms we see hiking around the greenbelt in Austin, with Barton Springs Pool representing it’s largest release point. Where else can you swim in a massive naturally spring fed pool in the middle of the city?

About 28 millions gallons of fresh spring water exit the spillway at Barton Springs pool everyday. There’s really nothing else like it, and for those of us who maintain a sense of environmental awareness in Central Texas, living here is nothing short of a privilege. We know that with great privilege comes great responsibility and hope to live up to that responsibility in any way we can. One way to do that is by supporting efforts to preserve it. Please feel free to participate.
